Oral health for pregnancy and new babies - Oral health during your pregnancy

NHS dental treatment is FREE for you during your pregnancy and until your child is one year old.

Make an appointment to visit a dentist as soon as possible now that you are pregnant. Help with finding a dentist in Wales is available through NHS 111 Wales – Services Near You: Dental Helplines

Choose healthy snacks and try to keep all sugary food and drinks to mealtimes. For more information, see Every Child Your Pregnancy and Birth and Foodwise in Pregnancy.

If your oral hygiene is not good, hormonal changes during pregnancy may cause your gums to become swollen and bleed when brushed. Brush teeth twice a day with a toothpaste containing 1350-1500ppm fluoride.

After brushing, spit don’t rinse.

If you have morning sickness, rinse your mouth out with water, but do not brush your teeth straight away.
