Referrals for the management of tooth decay in children

The Dental Public Health team in Public Health Wales analyses referral data from the electronic Referral Management System (eRMS) for the management of tooth decay in children. We also collect data from Health Boards on the number of out-patient dental extractions under general anaesthesia being performed.

This provides information on the referral rate for the management of tooth decay in children from high-street dentists, the distribution of children being referred, the number of children receiving extractions under general anaesthesia and its relation to deprivation.

The information produced helps to inform prevention strategies and enable NHS Wales to better plan and deliver dental services that meet the identified needs.

National Preventative Programmes for Tooth Decay in Children

Designed to Smile is a national preventative programme for young children designed to reduce levels of tooth decay across Wales. It aims to help start good habits by giving advice to families with young children, providing toothbrushes and toothpaste and encouraging regular dental check-ups.
