The Healthcare Associated Infections team at Public Health Wales were instructed by the Welsh Government to develop and support the implementation of surveillance following orthopaedic procedures undertaken in NHS hospitals in Wales. This process has been mandatory since 2007.
This report includes data captured both during the initial surgical procedure, revision surgery, and any other follow-up visits to the hospital (whether they were planned or not). The surveillance incorporates data collected by clinical teams and uses internationally agreed definitions, allowing Welsh data to be compared with and incorporated into other international databases, such as the ECDC European SSI database. This report details results obtained for surveillance data capture in 2018.
