Background
The pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccination (PPV) is currently offered to those aged 65 years and over and people aged two to 64 years in select clinical risk groups. PPV protects against 23 serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae that can cause pneumonia or serious invasive infections.

Data in this report is rom Audit+ as at 31st March 2020 supplied by NWIS Primary Care Team. Data are presented by Local Authority/Health Board of GP and are based on all general practices in Wales. All ages in this report are as at 31st March 2020.
Key points
- Uptake of pneumococcal vaccine in people aged two to 64 years in a clinical risk group was 32.8% during 2019/20. Uptake ranged by health board, from 41.5% in Betsi Cadwaladr UHB to 25.6% in Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB.
- Uptake of pneumococcal vaccine in people aged 65 years and over was 60.2%.
- Uptake ranged by health board, from 64.3% in Betsi Cadwaladr UHB to 55.5% in Hywel Dda UHB.
- Uptake increases steadily from age 65 (25.2%) to 74 (65.0%) years. Uptake was 73.7% in those aged 75 years and above.
- Uptake among patients aged two to 64 years in a clinical risk group was highest in patients with a cochlear implant (72.0%, n=149/207) and patients with chronic espiratory disease (41.5%, n=13649/32881). Uptake was lowest in patients with a cerebrospinal fluid leak (22.9%, n=274/1197).
- There are notable variations in uptake between and within health boards, especially in those under 65 years of age in clinical risk groups
