AWARe and notifiable disease
The Health Protection Team provides specialist public health advice on infectious disease control. We work closely with other NHS, local authorities and other agencies to help reduce the spread of infectious diseases in Wales.
How to report a notifiable disease
Health professionals can report a notifiable disease or enquire on a health protection matter by email. However, if it is an urgent matter or notification please ring AWARe on 0300 00 300 32.
Healthcare professionals wishing to report notifiable diseases which may need immediate or urgent public health action, should always contact us by telephone.
Who we are and what we do
The Health Protection Team delivers an All Wales Acute Response Service known as AWARe, which receives all notifiable disease reports during normal working hours.
We also have seven regional teams which are based throughout Wales and are aligned to the three regions of:
- North Wales and Powys Health boards – Betsi Cadwaladr and Powys. Councils of Powys, Flintshire, Isle of Anglesey, Conwy, Denbighshire, Gwynedd, and Wrexham
- South East Wales Health boards – Cwm Taf Morgannwg, Cardiff and Vale, Aneurin Bevan. Councils of Rhondda Cynon Taf , Merthyr Tydfil, Cardiff, Bridgend and Vale of Glamorgan, Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouth, Newport and Torfaen)
- Mid and West Wales Health boards – Swansea Bay (inc Neath Port Talbot) and Hywel Dda. Councils of Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, Swansea and Neath Port Talbot
These teams work closely with regional partners to reduce the impact of infectious diseases in their local community.

Email notifications are only reviewed Monday to Friday 9am-5pm.
Outside of these times we also have an on-call team, who deal with urgent health protection issues only who can be contacted through 0300 00 300 32.
