Statutory Health Impact Assessments (HIAs) for Public Bodies – An Introduction to the HIA Process

This training is focused upon raising awareness of the Health Impact Assessment (HIA) Wales Regulations 2025 that come into force 6th April 2027.

These sessions will provide:

  • A basic overview of HIA
  • An overview of the Regulations and what they mean for Public Bodies
  • Details on how the regulations relate to the steps of the HIA process
  • Benefits of HIA

Sessions will also include built in Q&A time to offer an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have. These sessions can help to provide a basic understanding of the regulations to be built upon in further training sessions.

Audience: Representatives from public bodies in Wales

Length: 1.5 hours

Statutory Health Impact Assessments (HIAs) for Public Bodies – An Introduction to the HIA Process e-learning

Designed to complement the HIA Guide for Public Bodies, the course will cover:​

  • An overview of HIA​
  • Policy Context​
  • Regulation requirements relating to the steps of the HIA process​
  • Benefits and Consequences of HIA
  • Further reading/case study examples.

Audience: Representatives from public bodies in Wales

Length: 1 hour

Format: online e-learning

How to register: This course is currently under development and will be available in November 2026.

Statutory Health Impact Assessments (HIAs) for Public Bodies – Applying the HIA Process

This session will equip attendees with an understanding of the HIA methodology and ensure they are well-prepared for the HIA regulations.

The session will cover:

  • Overview of HIA
  • Regulations requirements relating the steps in the HIA process
  • Benefits of HIA
  • Case study example
  • An opportunity to apply the learning through a practical activity (Participatory HIA workshop)

Audience: Representatives from public bodies in Wales who are new to HIA and/or those with a basic understanding of HIA, who wish to learn more about HIA and have a go at one step of the HIA process.

Length: 2.5 hours

Voluntary Health Impact Assessments (HIAs) and Best Practice – Applying the HIA Process

This session will equip practitioners with an understanding of the HIA methodology and knowledge of the recourses and tools available to support its application in their work.

The session will cover:

  • Overview of HIA
  • The HIA process
  • Benefits of HIA
  • Case study example
  • An opportunity to apply the learning through a practical activity (Participatory HIA workshop)

Audience: Those who are new to HIA and/or those with a basic understanding of HIA, who wish to learn more about HIA best practice and have a go at one step of the HIA process.

Length: 2.5 hours

Voluntary Health Impact Assessments (HIAs) and Best Practice – An Introduction to the HIA Process e-Learning

Designed to complement the Voluntary HIA Guide, the course covers:

  • HIA in Wales
  • What is HIA?
  • Health, Well-being and Principles of HIA
  • The Process and the Tools
  • Practical Application of HIA

A certificate of completion is available to download upon finishing the course.

Audience: Those who are new to carrying out HIAs, those with an interest in them or health integration into other impact assessments and who would like to learn more.

Length: 1 hour

Health Impact Assessment (HIA) Awareness raising sessions

Aims:

  • Focused upon raising awareness of the HIA process, the benefits it can offer and how it can be applied in practice.
  • A great ‘first step’ in the HIA journey and the built in Q&A time offers an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have.
  • Provide a basic understanding of HIA to be built upon in further training sessions.

Audience: Anyone who is interested in learning about HIA.

Length: 45 minutes

Quality assuring and reviewing Health Impact Assessments e-Learning

The course includes sections on:

  • Defining quality and why Quality Assurance (QA) is important in the context of HIA?
  • What is being Quality Assured/reviewed
  • The QA process and considerations – introducing the QA framework
  • Practical exercise – to undertake a short review of a HIA

A certificate of completion is available to download on finishing the course.

Audience: Those who are carrying out HIAs, reviewing them or using HIAs as evidence within their work and would like a critical appraisal tool to assess quality.

Length: 1 hour
