As part of the UK’s 20-year vision to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR), the Welsh Government have committed to a series of five-year national Action Plans.

To align with the second of these UK AMR Action Plans (2024/25 – 2029/30), the Welsh Government issued the health circular (WHC/2024/038). This defined improvement goals based on the 2019/20 baseline data. One key objective was the reduction in total antimicrobial use within primary care by 2029/30, consistent with a minimum 10% reduction against 2019/20 baseline levels.

Public Health Wales have been tasked with reporting the progress against these improvement goals. This report, prepared by the Dental Public Health team, presents the current position for NHS Dentistry in Wales.

We would like to acknowledge and thank NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership (Primary Care Services) and the PHW / Healthcare Associated Infection, Antimicrobial Resistance & Prescribing programme (HARP).
