The Standards for the Welsh Network of Health and Well-being Promoting Schools
What are the Standards for the Welsh Network of Health and Well-being Promoting Schools?
The WNHWPS national Standards make it easier for schools to focus on the core principles of a whole-school approach that support a range of health and well-being outcomes. They align directly with the Whole-School Approach to Emotional and Mental Wellbeing Statutory Framework and embody its core values of belonging, efficacy, and voice. The Standards were developed from the international evidence base, the WSAEMWB Statutory Framework and the WHO/UNESCO Global Standards and Indicators for Health-Promoting Schools and have been aligned to other national frameworks including the Curriculum for Wales and Estyn’s Inspection Framework. Significant engagement with schools, children, and young people, the health and well-being promoting schools’ workforce, health and education stakeholders all helped to develop the Standards and supporting guidance and resources.
How will schools meet the Standards?
The WNHWPS validation process recognises the effective practice schools undertake to embed the national Standards as part of a continuous improvement approach. Schools progress through stages of validation that form a repeating cycle designed to support sustained development and long‑term impact.
Validation is not an end point; rather, it marks a moment in a school’s ongoing journey where progress is acknowledged and the next cycle begins. As schools embed the national Standards, they work towards achieving Bronze, Silver or Gold levels.
How will schools be rewarded for excellent practice?
Alongside our validation process, we also celebrate outstanding achievement through the annual WNHWPS Awards. Any school working towards the Standards can be recognised for exceptional projects and innovative practice.
