About breast screening - Signs and symptoms of breast cancer

Breast cancer can cause a number of signs and symptoms. Most breast changes, including breast lumps are not breast cancer. Finding breast cancer early gives you the best chance of successful treatment.

Get any new changes checked by your doctor. Do not wait for your breast screening appointment.

Signs and symptoms to look out for:

  • A lump or swelling in the breast, upper chest or the armpit.
  • A change in size, shape or colour of one breast.
  • A change to the skin such as puckering or dimpling of the skin.
  • Any change in the position of the nipple – pulled in or pointing differently.
  • Any unusual discharge (liquid) or blood from the nipple.
  • A rash or crusting around the nipple.
  • Discomfort or pain in one breast that is continuous and new for you.

It is important to get to know how your breasts look and feel, this will help you notice any changes that are different.

Things you can do to keep healthy:

  • Attend for breast screening when your receive an invitation.
  • Report any changes to your doctor without delay.
