Whole School Approach to Emotional and Mental Well-being (WSAEMWB)
Empowering schools to create and embed a positive culture towards emotional and mental well-being.
What is the WSAEMWB framework?
Purpose: To address the emotional and mental well-being needs of all learners and school staff, as part of the whole-school community.
Background: Welsh Government published the WSAEMWB Framework in April 2021 for all Local Authority maintained schools to adhere to.
The WSAEMWB Framework requires the whole school community to self-evaluate the culture of their own emotional and mental well-being and to develop action plans building on strengths within their unique contexts. It encourages the creation of a school well-being ethos based on three values:
- Belonging
- Efficacy
- Voice
It also requires schools to work alongside others and recognise when to seek help when there are emotional and mental well-being needs are identified.
What are Public Health Wales doing to support the WSAEMWB?
Empowering School Communities: Creating cultures where learners and staff feel able to cope with the daily ups and downs of life. This is achieved with the support of dedicated coordinators and resources such as the self-evaluation tool.
Supporting the CAMHS In-Reach Teams: There are 7 In-Reach Teams in Wales one in each Health Board. We are supporting these teams as they come alongside schools offering training, consultation, and provide a bridge to other services and advice.
Creating a What Works Toolkit: Evidence summaries to help schools make informed decisions by finding out whether school-based interventions and approaches make a difference to learner and staff emotional and mental well-being.
How is the WSAEMWB being measured for impact?
It takes time to measure change, so there are several methods being used to understand the impact of the WSAEMWB:
- Monitoring how many schools are widely adopting the WSAEMWB.
- Independent Evaluation: A three-year mixed-methods evaluation on the WSAEMWB framework, being carried out by Decipher which is part of Cardiff University.
- Process Evaluations: The purpose of these evaluations is to understand how schools have been embedding the WSAEMWB. Evaluation findings can be seen in the Learning Reports below:
- Learning Report 1: How are schools embedding self-evaluation to understand the needs and strengths of their school community.
- Learning Report 1 Poster
- Learning Report 2: Planning and implementation of actions to protect and pro
